What STEM people actually do all day.
Most students meet three STEM careers growing up: doctor, engineer, teacher. There are dozens. Here is what a real day looks like inside twelve of them.
Do not pick a career. Pick a kind of work you like, and then find the careers that reward it. If you love being outdoors, some paths are ruled in and others are ruled out immediately. If the thought of a five-hour meeting fills you with dread, that also narrows the list. Work backwards from the shape of the day you want.
Students often ask "what should I become?" as if the label is the thing. It is not. A biologist can spend her career at a microscope, or knee-deep in a mangrove swamp, or in front of a whiteboard arguing about statistics. Same label, three very different lives. The question that matters is the second one: what would you like to be doing at 3 pm on a Tuesday?
How to read this page.
Each of the twelve profiles below follows the same format, so you can skim and compare. First: what a person in this role actually does on an average day — not the LinkedIn version, the real one. Second: the education path in India, with the specific degrees and institutions that actually feed into this job.
Third: honest money. Entry, mid-career, and senior salary ranges in Indian rupees, in 2026 terms. These are approximate and vary widely by city, employer, and specialisation, but they are grounded in what people we know are actually paid. We have not rounded up to make anything look better than it is.
Fourth: the kind of person who thrives here. Not "you must love science" — that is table stakes — but the specific temperament that survives ten years in this work without burning out. And at the bottom, a real Indian figure or institution where this work happens, so you have somewhere to look.
Twelve careers, in detail.
Research Scientist
The long game. You publish papers no one outside your field will read, and occasionally one that changes everything.
Half the day is at a bench or a screen running experiments. The other half is writing — grants to fund the next experiment, papers reporting the last one, and emails to collaborators three time zones away. You mentor PhD students, sit on committees, and once a month give a seminar. Progress is measured in years.
BSc in your science, then an MSc or an integrated 5-year MS. Then a PhD (5 to 6 years). Then a postdoc, often abroad. Then you apply for faculty positions. Institutions: IISc Bangalore, TIFR, the IISERs, NCBS, JNCASR, CCMB.
PhD stipend around Rs 40,000 per month. Postdoc around Rs 65,000. Faculty starting salary about Rs 1.2L per month; a senior professor at a top institute earns Rs 2.5L to Rs 3L per month. You will never be rich. You will be free.
You are patient enough to spend three years on a question you cannot fully explain at parties, comfortable being wrong in public, and get real satisfaction from a well-run experiment even when it fails.

Environmental Engineer
Water in, waste out. You design the systems that keep cities livable.
Site visits to treatment plants, industrial outfalls, landfills. Back at the office, you draft designs in AutoCAD, model contaminant flows, and write reports for regulators or clients. Meetings with civil engineers, municipal officers, and occasionally very angry residents. Field work is dusty; the office work is not.
BE or BTech in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering. An MTech in Environmental Engineering opens the senior technical roles. Employers: consulting firms (AECOM, Ramboll), CPCB and state pollution boards, municipal corporations, and environmental NGOs.
Entry level Rs 4 to 8 lakh per year. Mid-career Rs 12 to 20 lakh. Senior engineers and consultants Rs 30 lakh and up. International consulting or Gulf postings can push that considerably higher.
You want your work to be visibly useful, you do not mind switching between a site jacket and a boardroom in the same week, and you can hold your ground in a meeting with people who wish the regulation did not exist.
Real Indian working in this field: Look up: any principal engineer at an environmental consulting firm in Delhi or Bangalore, or a senior scientist at the Central Pollution Control Board.
Bioinformatician
A biologist who codes, or a coder who reads biology papers. Either way, the data is enormous.
Mostly at a terminal, running pipelines that align genome sequences, cluster gene expression data, or predict protein structures. You debug scripts, argue with collaborators about statistical thresholds, and read papers to stay ahead of a field that moves monthly. Rarely inside a wet lab, but constantly talking to people who are.
Two routes work: BSc in biology plus self-taught Python and R, then an MSc in Bioinformatics; or BTech in Computer Science plus an MSc/MTech in Bioinformatics. NCBS, inStem, IIIT-Delhi, IISc, and the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics all run strong programmes.
Entry Rs 6 to 10 lakh per year in academic labs; higher in industry. Mid-career Rs 15 to 25 lakh at biotech or pharma companies. Senior computational biologists at global pharma or well-funded startups clear Rs 40 lakh and up.
You are equally comfortable writing a for-loop and reading a paper on ribosome assembly. You do not need every result to be a physical object — a well-shaped plot is enough.

Data Scientist
The person the business goes to when it wants to know whether the thing it thinks is happening is actually happening.
Cleaning data (a lot of cleaning), building models, running experiments, and translating findings into a slide a Vice President will look at for eight seconds. You spend as much time explaining what a p-value means as you spend calculating one. The best data scientists are half statistician, half storyteller.
Any quantitative undergrad — statistics, mathematics, physics, CS, economics — then an MS in Data Science or self-taught via serious portfolio projects. Employers everywhere: banks, healthtech (Practo, PharmEasy), e-commerce (Flipkart, Meesho), consulting, and every startup with more than fifty people.
Entry Rs 8 to 15 lakh per year. Mid-career Rs 20 to 40 lakh. Senior data scientists at top product companies earn Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1 crore, and the leadership roles at US firms’ India offices go higher still.
You are suspicious of your own conclusions, patient with dirty data, and can explain a regression to someone who last did maths in class 10.

Robotics Engineer
You design things that move on their own without hurting anyone.
CAD in the morning, controls code in the afternoon, and the last hour on the shop floor watching your prototype either move gracefully or embarrass you. Iteration is constant; a small change in a gripper can take a week of testing. Deadlines are hard because a robot that "works" on video has to work a thousand times in production.
BTech in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, then an MTech in Robotics or Mechatronics. Employers: Tata Elxsi, Mahindra, Bosch, GreyOrange (warehouse robots), Addverb, ISRO, and a growing set of Bangalore/Hyderabad deep-tech startups.
Entry Rs 5 to 9 lakh per year. Mid-career Rs 15 to 25 lakh. Senior robotics engineers in industry Rs 40 lakh and up. Equity at an early-stage robotics startup can add up meaningfully — or to nothing.
You like watching physical things do a task, you can tolerate the fact that reality does not care about your simulation, and you do not mind a small burn from a hot motor now and then.
Real Indian working in this field: Look up: any senior engineer at GreyOrange or an ISRO systems engineer working on autonomous rovers.
Clinical Researcher
You are the person who runs the trials that decide whether a drug reaches patients.
Designing trial protocols, coordinating with hospitals, monitoring patient recruitment, checking data for anomalies, and preparing submissions for the drug regulator. Long meetings with statisticians, ethics committees, and medical writers. If you are on the hospital side, you also see patients enrolled in your studies.
Two entry points: MBBS followed by a diploma or MSc in Clinical Research, or an MSc in Life Sciences plus a specialised Clinical Research diploma (ICRI, Cliniminds, ICMR institutes). Employers: contract research organisations (ICON, Parexel, IQVIA), pharma companies (Dr Reddy’s, Biocon, Sun), and academic medical centres.
Entry Rs 5 to 8 lakh per year. Mid-career Rs 12 to 20 lakh. Senior clinical research managers Rs 30 lakh and up; if you cross into global pharma leadership, considerably more.
You have a very high tolerance for paperwork done properly, take patient safety personally, and can hold detail across a document that runs to hundreds of pages.

Field Ecologist / Wildlife Biologist
You count animals in forests for a living. Read that sentence twice before you sign up.
In the field: pre-dawn starts, kilometres on foot, camera traps, transect counts, notebooks damp from monsoon. In town: writing up data, applying for permits, drafting papers, and teaching. You will spend weeks away from a proper bed. You will also see things almost no one else on earth will ever see.
BSc in Zoology, Botany, or Environmental Science; then an MSc in Wildlife Science (Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun is the flagship, NCBS also runs a strong programme); then a PhD. Employers: WII, NCF (Nature Conservation Foundation), WCS-India, ATREE, and various state forest departments.
Be honest with yourself here: this is a passion field. Entry Rs 3 to 6 lakh per year. Senior researchers with international grants Rs 10 to 15 lakh. If you want to earn a lot of money, do something else. If you want to spend your career in forests, this is the deal.
You genuinely prefer being outdoors to being anywhere else, can be alone for weeks and think of it as a gift, and do not equate income with success.

Science Journalist / Communicator
You are the translator between a paper and the person on the metro reading it.
Reading papers, interviewing scientists, sitting on preprint alerts, writing, and rewriting after an editor tears the draft up. If you work in video or audio, add recording and editing to that list. Deadlines are constant. The pay-off is a piece that a curious teenager somewhere actually finishes.
Any science degree plus serious writing chops — the writing is the harder half. Start with a blog, a Substack, or freelance pieces. Outlets to aim for: The Wire Science, Mongabay India, Scroll, IndiaSpend, and the science desks of major dailies. Fellowships (ACJ, ICJP, IISc SciCommDev) accelerate the path.
Freelance rates in India range from Rs 3 to Rs 20 per word; a good freelance year is Rs 6 to 12 lakh. Staff writer Rs 4 to 10 lakh. Senior editor at a well-funded outlet Rs 15 to 25 lakh. International freelance work in dollars changes the picture.
You care about clarity more than cleverness, can take editing without ego, and are curious about many fields rather than obsessed with one.

Product Engineer (Hardware)
You design the physical object — the sensor, the drone, the medical device — that someone else’s software runs on.
Mechanical or electronic design in CAD/EDA tools, sourcing components, endless emails with vendors in Shenzhen, and afternoons on the assembly bench soldering prototypes. Stress-testing under heat, vibration, and drops. Everything has a cost target, and you will negotiate every rupee of it.
BTech in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics Engineering; an MS abroad or an MTech at IISc/IITs opens the deep-tech door. Employers: hardware startups in Bangalore and Hyderabad (drones, medical devices, IoT), and R&D arms of Samsung, Bosch, Continental, and Tata Elxsi.
Entry Rs 8 to 12 lakh per year at a good hardware startup; higher at MNC R&D centres. Mid-career Rs 20 to 35 lakh. Senior engineers with equity at a successful startup can do very well if the startup exits; most do not.
You get satisfaction from holding a thing you designed, you can respect a supply chain, and you are patient enough that "one more revision" does not break you.
Real Indian working in this field: Look up: any founding engineer at a Bangalore-based drone or medical device startup (ideaForge, Skyroot, Niramai).
UX Researcher
You are a psychologist paid to notice everything a product does wrong before your users do.
Recruiting participants, running user interviews, sitting behind a one-way mirror watching someone try to complete a task in your app, and coding transcripts for patterns. You present findings to designers and engineers who occasionally disagree loudly. Your best deliverable is a small insight that changes a design decision.
BSc in Psychology, Design, or Human-Computer Interaction, then an MDes or MS in HCI (IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIIT-Delhi, Srishti). Employers: product companies (Zomato, Swiggy, PhonePe, Microsoft India), design consultancies (Fjord, Lollypop), and every serious fintech.
Entry Rs 7 to 12 lakh per year. Mid-career Rs 15 to 25 lakh. Senior UX researchers at top product companies Rs 25 to 45 lakh, sometimes higher at global tech offices.
You genuinely enjoy watching people struggle without jumping in to help, you can hold a straight face during a bad user session, and you are equally interested in what people say and what they do.

Public Health Practitioner
Not medicine one patient at a time. Medicine one district at a time.
Designing interventions — a vaccination drive, a TB detection programme, a maternal health outreach — and then measuring whether they worked. You work with district officials, NGO field teams, and statisticians. Field visits to Primary Health Centres. Long reports for funders. Slow, structural, essential work.
MBBS plus MPH (Master of Public Health), or an MSc in Public Health / Health Economics. PHFI, AIIMS, TISS, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine are common credentials. Employers: WHO, PHFI, state health departments, NITI Aayog, and NGOs like PATH, JPAL, and CHAI.
Entry Rs 5 to 10 lakh per year at Indian NGOs or state bodies. Mid-career Rs 15 to 25 lakh. Senior roles at global public-health organisations Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1 crore, depending on the funder and posting.
You are motivated by scale rather than individual cases, can hold onto a five-year plan even when a quarter goes badly, and enjoy the puzzle of getting a system to move.

Startup Founder (Deeptech)
You spend five years earning nothing to build something the world may not want. Most do not make it. Some change everything.
Half your week is the actual technical work — a prototype, a paper, a demo. The other half is fundraising calls, hiring, payroll, and reassuring a co-founder at 11 pm that this is still a good idea. You will be the janitor, the CTO, and the therapist. The first five years are mostly rejection.
Usually a technical degree (BTech / MS / PhD) plus several years of deep experience in the field. Programmes like IIT-Madras Research Park, C-CAMP Bangalore, and IIM incubators help. Investors of note: Speciale Invest, pi Ventures, Blume, and the deep-tech desks of Accel and Peak XV.
Zero to infinity, with most outcomes near zero. Founders often pay themselves Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month for years. A successful exit or IPO can be life-changing wealth. A failed startup can be five lost years. Both are common. Go in with your eyes open.
You can hold conviction longer than the room around you, treat rejection as data, and are willing to be publicly wrong for years before you are right.

Paths you didn’t know were STEM.
Six more careers that quietly need a science brain, but do not show up in career-day slideshows:
You analyse crime-scene evidence — DNA, ballistics, toxicology — for state forensic labs, CBI, or private forensic firms. Chemistry or biology degree, then a specialised MSc in Forensic Science.
Crop breeding, soil health, precision farming, agri-tech startups (DeHaat, Ninjacart). BSc/MSc from an agricultural university (ICAR institutes, GB Pant, TNAU). Agri-tech in India is genuinely growing.
You brief the government on what science says about a policy question — energy, biotech, AI. Employers: NITI Aayog, DST think tanks, TIFAC, Takshashila. Any science degree plus writing and public policy training.
Half lawyer, half scientist. You draft and defend patents for inventions. A BTech or MSc followed by a law degree and patent-agent certification. Firms: K&S Partners, Anand and Anand, Remfry & Sagar.
You build mathematical models that decide how a hedge fund or a bank trades. Physics/maths/CS undergrad, then MSc in Quantitative Finance. Employers: WorldQuant, D E Shaw India, Goldman Sachs, Tower Research.
You find the holes in systems before attackers do. Penetration testing, incident response, security architecture. Any CS/IT degree plus certifications (OSCP, CEH). Employers: TCS, Wipro cyber practice, banks, and specialist firms like Lucideus.
How to pick.
These five questions are more useful than any personality test. Answer them honestly first, then re-read the profiles above with your answers in mind.
- What time do you want to wake up? Field ecologists rise before dawn. Startup founders often work past midnight. Faculty scientists set their own hours but work them all. This is not a small detail.
- Alone or with people? Bioinformaticians and journalists can go days with mostly asynchronous contact. UX researchers and clinical trial coordinators are in someone’s face most hours of the day. Neither is better; they are different lives.
- Indoors or outdoors? This decides more than you think. Wildlife biology and environmental engineering give you real weather. Data science and patent law give you very good air-conditioning. Choose truthfully.
- How much risk of failure can you carry? A startup founder or a PhD candidate lives with a 70 to 90 per cent chance of the project not working. A civil-service scientist or a corporate data scientist trades the upside for a paycheque that arrives on the same day every month. Both are respectable.
- How much money is enough? Not "how much would be nice" — how much you actually need to feel calm. If the answer is Rs 30 lakh a year by thirty, wildlife biology is not for you. If the answer is Rs 8 lakh and a life you like, half these fields open up.
The careers on this page all exist because someone, twenty or fifty years ago, was doing something odd and interesting that nobody had a name for yet. Bioinformatics did not exist as a job title in 1990. UX research did not exist as a job title in 2000. Data scientist barely existed in 2010. The one you eventually do may not be on any list you can find today.
